WILMINGTON — A county-led drive to collect furniture and household items for displaced families scheduled for Mar. 26 is being postponed.

More than 150 families have been removed from their Wilmington Housing Authority homes due to an ongoing mold crisis, and the county has been working to collect items for when they get re-settled.

Many lost their personal belongings when items were moved to storage pods after residents vacated their units out of health concerns. Many of those items were destroyed due to the storage units not being climate-controlled and the mold spreading.

New Hanover County’s Office of Diversity and Equity had led the charge it’s named “Operation Going Home Again.” The New Hanover County Disaster Coalition, a partnership of 80 community agencies, has taken responsibility for collecting and storing the donations and is currently seeking additional warehouse space. Once that is secured, it will release a new date for the drive.

Previously listed as items of need included sofas, loveseats, coffee tables, end tables, lamps, arm chairs, dining tables, dining chairs, bed frames, nightstands, dressers, bookshelves, dishes, kitchen and cooking utensils, cups and glasses, mugs, pots and pans, baking sheets, baking pans, and small appliances.

New items such as toilet paper, bed sheets, and so on were also a priority.

A full list of accepted donations, along with drop-off location, will be released when the new collection date is announced.

Visit the New Hanover Disaster Coalition website or Facebook page for updates.
