Water conservation alert in effect for some areas in Brunswick County

UPDATE: It is no longer necessary to boil water or use bottled water for human consumption.  The system has resumed normal operations.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Some customers of Brunswick County Public Utilities Authority are advised to conserve water Mar. 18.

A release from the county requests consumers “refrain from all non-essential water use, including lawn irrigation, car washing, etc.” It will remain in effect until further notice.

This will affect people between Shallotte and South Carolina. Customers in the Town of Shallotte proper are not affected, it states.

Overnight construction work on a major water line has been extended. Normal system pressure is expected to be restored by evening.

Customers may “experience lower than normal water pressure,” as well as more noticeable chlorine, in both taste and smell.

There is also potential for back-siphonage, which could increase bacteria into the water system. Consumers who don’t use bottle water should boil all tap water for one minute before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.
