BALD HEAD ISLAND — Bald Head Island Transportation has been ordered by the North Carolina Utilities Commission to change and add new baggage policies to the ferry system.

The order limits checked baggage to three items per passenger. It also restricts the size and weight of checked luggage, which can no longer exceed the standard 48-quart cooler and weigh no more than 50 pounds.

The policy affects non-carry-on items, such as bikes, or gear larger than 7 feet that won’t fit on the baggage dolly.

Excess baggage or items that weigh more will be subject to a $23 per item fee, in addition to fares each person pays. The new policies will go into effect Apr. 1
