New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties under tornado watch

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the tri-county area is under a tornado watch until 1 p.m.

Areas affected span six North Carolina counties: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Pender and Robeson.

Cities affected include Bladenboro, Boiling Springs Lake, Burgaw, Chadbourn, Elizabethtown, Lake Waccamaw, Leland, Lumberton, Oak Island, Southport, Sunset Beach, Surf City, Tabor City, Whiteville and Wilmington.

Winds gusts are expected to be 25 to 35 miles per hour and can top out at 50, according to the NWS. Residents should secure unsecured objects and beware of felled tree limbs; it also may result in a few power outages. The wind advisory is in effect until noon.
