UNCW conducts controlled burn

UNCW announced a controlled burn will take place Tuesday on its main campus, affecting 67 acres of longleaf pine forest.

The area is bordered by Carleton Place, Clear Run Creek, Rose Avenue and UNCW forest, and will occur only on the ground with low intensity, according to a release from the university. The burn will last less than a full day, and the sight and odor will be detectable on campus and in nearby neighborhoods.

According to the university, the UNCW Environmental Health and Safety and facilities personnel will be on site at all times and safety protocols will be followed to lessen smoke exposure.

“A controlled burn decreases the chances of a more intense and hazardous wildfire by destroying the fuel load of the accumulated layer of leaf litter and improves the health of the longleaf pine forest, which is a fire-dependent ecosystem,” according to the UNCW release.
