LELAND – Old Fayetteville Road in Leland is gaining recognition from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The department’s annual Mobi Awards focus on completed projects that promote safety, help build connections, and strengthen livable communities. Leland’s Old Fayetteville Road Multi-Use Path and Resurfacing project is up for the vote.
Judges choose finalists in five categories: rural, small urban, urban, large urban, and innovation. Also included will be Most Voted Project. The winner is selected based on votes from the public, open until Feb. 25. Participants can vote up to three times a day.
In Oct. 2021, the Town of Leland opened the multi-use path. Running along the north side of Old Fayetteville Road from Founders Park to North Brunswick High School, the paved path is approximately one mile, multimodal, and set apart from traffic.
Of the $2.6 million project cost, 80% was funded by the Federal Highway Administration and 20% was funded by the Town of Leland. A one-mile stretch of Old Fayetteville Road was repaved as part of this project as well. Collaborations with the Town of Leland, NCDOT, and the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO), made the project finalization possible.
Leland’s Old Fayetteville Road Multi-Use Path will establish an important link to other local recreational facilities and trails in Leland and the overall region.
Finalists for the 2022 NCDOT Mobi Awards will be informed in March, and winners will be announced May 4. More information can be found by visiting the Town of Leland.
