Car submerged in Cape Fear River, driver pulled to safety

WILMINGTON — Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that took place Tuesday evening. The vehicle was submerged in the Cape Fear River.

The car matches one that evaded police earlier in the evening, according to a release from the Wilmington Police Department.

Around 6:30 p.m. a witness reported a car was in the river at Water and Ann streets at the downtown riverwalk. WPD said the witness described “the driver was still in the water hanging onto the pilings.”

Wilmington Fire Department pulled the driver to safety and EMS transferred him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

WPD is investigating the scene and advises people to avoid the area at Ann and Water, as the riverwalk is blocked off currently.
