NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant on Rockwell Road last week that prevented nearly 7,000 fentanyl-laced pills from making it to the streets.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Vice-Narcotics Division reported it concluded a six-month narcotic investigation in Wilmington, with the arrest of Leslie Nicole Mitchell and her son, Payton James Mitchell on Thursday, Feb. 10.
Detectives retrieved 6,900 pressed pills (760.0 grams) containing fentanyl. The pills are estimated to be worth $140,000. Police also confiscated a loaded Glock handgun and U.S. currency.
The department surmises Payton could be responsible for trafficking over 50,000 fentanyl-laced pills across the county over the last half year. Both suspects were charged with several drug trafficking-related offenses, according to NHCSO.
Payton Mitchell received an $11.6-million bond and Leslie Mitchell received a $2-million bond.
