Man robs Silver Lake Market with fake gun

NEW HANOVER COUNTY —A man is behind bars after allegedly attempting to rob a market on Carolina Beach Road Tuesday night.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office reported Benjamin Carl Dearmond, 22, brandished a handgun in Silver Lake Market and demanded cash from the register before 9 p.m. Once he got the money, the man fled the store on foot, but was eventually caught by deputies.

The sheriff’s office responded to the scene of the crime and set up a perimeter. Dearmond, matching the description of the robber, was found in the 300 block of Silver Lake Road. As deputies approached him, the office says he again took out his weapon but “soon complied with Deputies and was taken into custody.”

Deputies discovered a fake semi auto handgun along with the cash from the market on Dearmond.

Dearmond is charged with common law robbery along with resist, obstruct and delay. He is at the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $35,500 secure bond.
