Sewer overflows into Whiskey Creek

WILMINGTON — Untreated wastewater leaked into Whiskey Creek during a sanitary sewer overflow Sunday.

A local resident reported a broken sewage line in the 4200 block of Whitehurst Drive, behind a CFPUA pump station, around 9:30 p.m. A crew was able to stop the spill by about 10:50 p.m., according to a news release.

Crews managed to retract some of this wastewater using pump-and-haul operations to prevent further leakage.

“These efforts are ongoing and repairs to the broken sewer line are underway,” according to CFPUA.

The results of an ongoing assessment estimate less than 10,000 gallons went into the creek.

CFPUA reported the overflow to the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality and is sampling surface waters to assess the water quality.
