Campus visitor sexually assaulted at UNCW Friday night: Police

WILMINGTON — A woman was sexually assaulted Friday night on UNCW’s campus by an unknown male, according to a university announcement Monday.

The unidentified victim “was on campus as a guest of a female residential student,”  according to the university’s announcement. The assault reportedly occurred around 11:30 p.m. Friday, in a bathroom of the Seahawk Crossing 2 residence hall.

The victim reported the assault to the UNCW Police Department on Sunday, Jan. 30.

“The investigation of this incident is ongoing, and actions have been taken to provide the victim with support and services,” according to the university. “Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is encouraged to contact UPD at 910.962.2222 or via the LiveSafe app. You can report tips anonymously if you choose.”

UNCW police do not believe there is an immediate threat remaining at this time.

WECT previously reported there were five open campus police investigations into incidents of sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence as of late October.

“The incidents did not involve unknown respondents/perpetrators or an ongoing threat to the campus community,” according to an Oct. 21 campus message from interim UNCW police chief Chris Bertram. “The university reviews each incident that is reported to staff to ensure the individuals involved have the opportunity to connect with law enforcement, utilize institutional formal processes including investigation, and receive supportive measures. Several of those individuals are working with law enforcement or other entities.”

Two more investigations into sexual assaults — both reportedly occurring at residence halls in October — were reported on in December.

Students who have experienced violence or sexual misconduct can confidentially seek resources at CARE, which employees two full-time advocates. Additional confidential resources for students are available at the Student Health Center and the Counseling Center on campus.
