BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The Brunswick Nuclear Plant will begin to test its warning sirens this week.
Starting Nov. 30, 38 sirens will sound off within 10 miles of the plant over a two-week period. The tests are necessary for proper maintenance and upgrades.
During the tests, sirens will sound for five to 30 seconds, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Testing is performed in cooperation with emergency officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens.
Local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to air Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. In the event of a real threat from the plant, local radio and TV stations would share information and instructions with the public.
