WILMINGTON –– Cape Fear Community College has established a scholarship to honor New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Captain David MacAlpine. MacAlpine died this month from Covid-19 at the age of 53.
The Captain David MacAlpine Memorial Endowment Scholarship will assist minority students in their training for law enforcement careers. CFCC Board of Trustee member Jimmy Hopkins, foundation board member Christopher Dunn, and their firm American Coastal Development initiated the fund with a $25,000 gift.
Cpt. MacAlpine oversaw the College Resource Officer Unit at CFCC. He served New Hanover County for 30 years and was a United States Marine Corps veteran.
“His leadership created a positive and proactive law enforcement presence on campus that made CFCC a safer place. He loved his community and dedicated his life to its service,” CFCC President Jim Morton said in a press release. “We hope this scholarship will help Captain MacAlpine’s legacy live on through the work of future law enforcement officers in our community.”
Students in the Basic Law Enforcement Training program must demonstrate a financial need to qualify for the scholarship. Preference will be given to minority applicants. Students may apply online.
