Sheriff, DA clear man who shot fellow construction worker on the job

NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s office have cleared a man who shot his colleague at a construction site off Carolina Beach Road Monday.

After 2 p.m. Aug. 9, a construction worker called 911 when another construction worker was acting aggressively and erratically at a worksite on Garrett Lea Parke. The man told the dispatcher “I got a Mexican running at me right now. I’m about to shoot him. He’s been threatening me,” according to WECT.

He told the man to back up several times before firing, striking Edwin Cristino Briceno Mairena in the neck. The shooter was detained when deputies arrived. “Mairena was verbally and physically combative with deputies and EMS as they tried to render aid,” the sheriff’s office shared in a statement.

Mairena was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.
