NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– In an attempt to entice potential job candidates, New Hanover County Schools is offering a $1,000 sign-on bonus to new bus drivers during the nationwide labor shortage.

The job pays $14 an hour and includes benefits. Both full and part-time roles are open.

Next month, the district is holding a bus driver job fair and inviting candidates to apply and interview for a position on the spot. At the event, people will have the opportunity to speak with current drivers and sign up for the next free commercial driver’s license classes.

The job fair is Saturday, Aug. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hoggard High School, located at 4305 Shipyard Boulevard in Wilmington.

“Bus drivers are an important part of our school communities, and I think the compensation we’re offering really shows how much we value them,” Director of Transportation Mark Clawson said in a press release. “This is a great job for retirees, parents with young children, or really anyone who wants a flexible schedule and benefits of a school system job.”
