PENDER COUNTY –– The Pender County Animal Shelter is full and asking rescues and prospective adopters to help before it is forced to euthanize dogs and cats.
In a Facebook live Monday night, shelter manager Jewell Horton sent out an “SOS.” The shelter only has a few cats and dogs that are spayed, neutered and ready to leave but is over capacity and needs families who were willing to adopt in the coming days and weeks, she explained. The shelter has 100 cages but was holding 130 animals at the time of the video.
Horton said it is the fullest the shelter has been in years.
“We have got to get some empty cages,” Horton pleaded. “I’m begging you to help us empty some cages.”
The Pender County shelter posts pets on its available animals and “coming soon” animals Facebook albums. Cats are free to adopt. Dog adoption fees are $75.
The shelter is open at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends.
