New Hanover public health offering walk-up vaccine clinic for 12 and older

NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County Health and Human Services Public Health has begun offering Covid-19 vaccines to individuals 12 and older.

Wednesday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an official approval of the Pfizer vaccine in children between 12 and 15.

“This updated authorization is extremely promising in that we can expand immunity to children as young as 12 and further protect our community from COVID-19,” New Hanover County Health and Human Services director Donna Fayko said in a press release. “COVID-19 continues to spread in New Hanover County, and currently children and teens account for 20 percent of cases statewide. So we continue to urge our community to take advantage of the convenient ways to get vaccinated and put an end to this pandemic.”

Young people are allowed to get the vaccine at a public health site without a parent or guardian present, per N.C. law that allows minors with decisional capacity to consent to medical services for the treatment and prevention of communicable diseases.

People can choose which vaccine (Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson) they would prefer. Johnson & Johnson is a one-dose vaccine approved for individuals 18 and older; Pfizer is a two-dose vaccine approved for anyone older than 12.
