SOUTHPORT – Dosher Memorial Hospital will host its 22nd Operation Medicine Cabinet drug drop Thursday, April 22.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., residents can discard excess and expired prescriptions at the front entrance of the hospital, located at 924 N. Howe St. in Southport.
Law enforcement will collect and safely rid of the medications.
“As this spring’s drop off event coincides with Earth Day, it is a timely reminder that ‘flushing’ unwanted medication is not recommended,” according to a Dosher statement. “Studies have shown that medicines flushed down a household drain can contaminate lakes or streams, hurt fish and wildlife, or potentially wind up in water supplies.”
Close to 400 households got rid of more than 8,000 narcotic pills and almost 1,280 milliliters of liquids at the last event in October 2019.
Operation Medicine Cabinet paused last year due the pandemic, but Dosher is continuing the service in 2021 in a drive-thru style.
