WPD reports weekend gun arrests

WILMINGTON — Coming off a period during mid-February in which the Wilmington Police Department confiscated seven guns in less than a week, police have reported a series of gun crimes last weekend.

While mobile field force officers patrolled Meares Street around 2:15 on Saturday afternoon, officers witnessed a man “trespassing on a porch,” according to a WPD press release.

The man, Michael Hines, 29, “attempted to hide a handgun from the approaching officer and fled once it was discovered,” the press release stated. “He was apprehended quickly and without incident.”

Another man near the Meares Street house, Quemar Wooten, “tried to walk away from the location.” After officers told him to stop, and the commands were ignored, Wooten, 34, “was detained and frisked.” Officers confiscated a stolen handgun from him.

Both men were charged with drug crimes, obstruction and unlawfully carrying guns. Hines was booked into the detention center under a $150,000 secured bond, while Wotten was booked under a $50,000 bond.
