Suspect arrested in ATM armed robbery case

WILMINGTON — A Brunswick County man was arrested Friday mid-morning for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery that took place earlier in the week.

Detectives identified Allen Jerome Smith Jr., 42, as a suspect in the robbery that took place on Monday, Dec. 1, at an ATM at 502 S. College Rd. Officers were called to the scene after a victim said they were held up at gunpoint after making a night donation at the Bank of America ATM.

Smith was taken into custody in the parking lot of a PNC Bank near Floral Parkway and Oleander Drive on Friday after the investigation was conducted in collaboration with the Wilmington Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina SBI, ATF, and FBI..

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be added, according to WPD.
