NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County Schools, in collaboration with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer unit, will now start conducting random, unannounced searches of its campuses.

NHCS reports this expansion of the K-9 units in its schools will “support the district’s efforts in maintaining a drug-free and weapon-free environment.”

“Our schools should always be places where students feel safe and focused on learning,” said Interim Superintendent Chris Barnes in a press release. “This initiative is another step in our commitment to providing a secure and supportive space for all.”
