BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Almost a dozen fire departments responded to another fire in the Old Georgetown Road area on Wednesday evening. The area has already had two wildfires, one in the summer and another earlier this month; however, this time crews responded to a structure fire.

Departments were called around 6:26 p.m. to a commercial/industrial structure located on Old Georgetown and Hale Swamp roads. On site were fire crews from Shallotte, Shallotte Point, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Civietown, Grissettown-Longwood, Waccamaw, Sunset Harbor, Tri-Beach, Calabash, Horry County (SC), Brunswick County Fire and EMS.

Each came with varied equipment from trucks to tankers to a water shuttle to help fight the flames. By 9 p.m., the fire was under control as crews remained on the scene, according to the Calabash Fire Department.

It’s unclear what started the fire, though there were calls made to 911 of explosions in the area. Nothing has been verified yet, but dispatch reports have indicated the structure had tanks on site. Black plumes of smoked emanated from the area before sunset, indicating it could be carbon-rich, petroleum-based or of synthetic materials.
