LAKE WACCAMAW — After a multi-hours search, the body of a missing kayaker was recovered from Lake Waccamaw on Tuesday.
Erick Ross, 25 from South Carolina, was reported missing Monday afternoon around 4:45 p.m., after an abandoned kayak was found at a boat ramp at Lake Waccamaw. Ross’ belongings were located inside the kayak.
The Town of Lake Waccamaw public safety and emergency personnel, as well as Lake Waccamaw State Park staff, assisted in the search. The search and rescue took place until 1 a.m. on Tuesday night and searches began again at 7 a.m. on Monday.
Ross’ body was found around 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 8. The Wildlife Resources Commission team utilize an offshore patrol boat equipped with sonar; Ross’ body was found near the Sigmon Wildlife Landing on Canal Cove.
It’s reported that Ross was a participant in this weekend’s Take the Lake personal fitness challenge.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult and tragic time,” Mayor Greg Jacobs said. “We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking situation.
Town of Lake Waccamaw Emergency Management Director Chase Lancaster echoed the same sentiments and thanked other agencies that helped during the search. This included agencies from counties such as Columbus, Brunswick, Nash, New Hanover, and Union.
