WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — Two individuals were struck by lightning Saturday morning after walking along Wrightsville Beach.

The incident occurred on Shell Island, located on the north end. Ocean Rescue Director Sam Proffit told Port City Daily emergency services were called at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Proffit said response calls to lightning strikes is “not very common.” He added that prior to Saturday’s event, Wrightsville Beach has not had a reported incident of a person getting struck by lightning for several years.

In 2022, an incident took place on Masonboro Island during the July 4th holiday of 33-year-old William Friend struck by lightning. Friend, who was married to “One Tree Hill” actress Bevin Prince, passed away.

The victim’s identities from Saturday’s strike have not yet been released and their conditions remain unknown.
