Motorcyclist dies in Oleander Drive collision

WILMINGTON — A traffic incident on Oleander Drive had some lanes closed earlier Wednesday as emergency crews responded to a collision that left one person dead at the scene.

The incident took place at 1:45 p.m., according to the Wilmington Police Department, in the 5900 block of Oleander Drive — near 58th Street. Wilmington firefighters and Novant EMS were dispatched as well.

Safety crews found a motorcycle and a small SUV were involved in the accident and the motorcycle driver perished from injuries as a result. The SUV passenger also was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

WPD has not released the name of the person who died, as the investigation continues with its traffic enforcement unit’s help. All roads in the vicinity had reopened by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
