The Agenda: Local government meetings this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government and community meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, it will be included, too.

Monday, Sept. 8

The Wilmington City Council will hold an agenda review at 8:30 a.m. in the Skyline Center, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here.

Start Board of Elections will meet at 9 a.m. in the Board Room of the Third Floor of the Dobbs Building, 430 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh; however, it’s also streamed here (password: NCSBE) or dial (415) 655-0003, enter access code 2420 493 4815#, passcode 62723#. Meeting materials are here and the agenda includes county board member vacancy appointments and guidance to counties on validating voter’s unmatched ID number. 

Navassa Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. at 338 Main St. An agenda was not posted by press.

Southport Board of Adjustment will meet at 113 W. Moore St. at 4:30 p.m. The agenda includes a special use permit for the operation of a tattoo parlor at 107 East 8th Street, a Business (BD) zoning district. The request comes as the City of Southport no longer has either an appropriate zoning designation for, or the land use, Tattoo and Piercing Establishment.

Leland Economic Tourism Development Authority will meet at 11 a.m. at Leland Fire Station 51; the public is welcome. The agenda includes a resolution to adopt a strategic plan and approve a grant contract for Leland in Lights.

Brunswick County Planning Board will meet at 4 p.m. at the Brunswick County Government Center. The agenda includes consideration of a rezoning request for a 1.4 acre property located at 1501 North Howe Street, changing zoning from neighborhood commercial to commercial low-density conditional zoning. Also, there will be public hearings for the site plan of a 650 unit residential development off of Ash-Little River Road, and for the site plan of a 1,000 single family unit residential development off of Cherrytree Road in Winnabow. The New Hanover County Airport Authority will meet at 5 p.m. in the ILM Conference Room. The agenda includes approval of an operating permit between the authority and Air Transport International, Inc. which allows ATI to operate at ILM and requires ATI to pay fees in accordance with rates and charges. 

Tuesday, Sept. 9

The Wilmington City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Skyline Center, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Ordinance Adding “Sec. 6-10. Certain Actions Prohibited on City Property” to Chapter 6, Article I of the Wilmington City Code. Catch up on PCD coverage here
  • Ordinance Amending the Official Zoning Maps of the City of Wilmington to Rezone Property Containing 4.08 Acres Located at 2929 Market Street from O&I, Office & Institutional to MD-17(CD), High-density Multiple Dwelling (Conditional District) for a 120-unit Workforce Housing Residential Development. The New Hanover County Schools Policy Committee will meet at 1 p.m. in the Board of Education Center, 1805 S. 13th St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Policy 4150 – School Assignment
  • Policy 2310 – Public Participation at Board Meetings

Oak Island Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers at town hall. The agenda includes appointing members to the Business Advisory Board, review of a residential site plan for 39.55 acres to build 180 townhomes, as approved via special use permit from council in May, and selecting council members for Economic Development Strategic Plan Project and members to participate on the Blue Ribbon Summit on Safety.

Carolina Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, 1122 North Lake Park Boulevard. The agenda includes adoption of a resolution of support for a WMPO transportation block grant. The meeting will livestream here

New Hanover County Board of Elections will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Board Room at the new Board of Elections Office, 226 Government Center Dr. to take action on Chief Judge and Judge appointments, conduct regular business and discuss election-related matters. Limited in-person seating will be available. Participants can stream it here or call in by dialing 1-336-218-2051, with conference ID 654 998 791 followed by pound (#).  

Burgaw Board of Commissioners will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Burgaw Town Center. The agenda includes a public hearing for a conditional rezoning request from office and institutional to R-7 residential. The 3.5 acre property is located on Worth Beverage Drive and Progress Drive. 

State ABC Commission will meet at its Raleigh office ​in Hearing Room 101 at 10 a.m. The agenda includes permittee eligibility for Edward Teach Brewing LLC, former owner David Gary Sholar regarding a salesman permit. Pender County Board of Elections meet at 6 p.m. at 305 Walker St. An agenda was not posted by press.

Pender County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. in the Dr. Katherine Herring Resource Center, 798 U.S. Highway 117. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  •  JH Lea Project Manager Contract

Wednesday, Sept. 10

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority Authority Board will meet at 9 a.m. at 230 Government Center Dr. in room 139. The meeting consists of committee reports, such as the Water Master Planning Update from the long-range planning committee and the 2024 Greenhouse Gas Report and Energy Action Plan Presentation from the sustainability committee; the executive director will also give his report. The agenda can be viewed here. After the authority board meeting, the HR Committee will meet at 10:30 a.m. to review employee benefits and give a workforce development update.

Topsail Beach Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. in the Topsail Beach Town Hall. The agenda includes consideration and discussion of the 2025 beach driving season and proposed amendments to the solid waste ordinance. 

Thursday, Sept. 11

Southport Board of Alderman will meet at 6 p.m. at the Community Building, 223 East Bay St. Meetings can be watched here and the agenda includes the stormwater regulation ordinance, an anticipated planning board vacancy, a proposal to amend the ordinance to create a formal Southport Business Advisory Board

Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Skyline Center, 929 N. Front St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Wilmington Iron Works, 201 South Water Street: Proposed Local Landmark Application
  • 1403 Rankin Street: Pool installation.
  • 411 Market Street and 15 North 5th Avenue: First Baptist Church educational building reconstruction and renovation

The New Hanover County Commissioners will hold an agenda review at 4 p.m. in the NHC Government Center, 230 Government Center Drive. Meetings are livestreamed here. An agenda was not posted by press. 

The Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Wrightsville Beach Town Hall. The agenda includes a public hearing and consideration of amending the land use ordinance to modify the special use process. The meeting will be uploaded here.

The Surf City Planning Board will meet at 4 p.m. in the Surf City Municipal Complex. An agenda was not posted by press.

Friday, Sept. 12

Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet at 10 a.m. at Commissioners’ Chambers, 30 Government Center Dr. NE, in Bolivia. The meeting is streamed here and the agenda includes a preliminary hearing and hearing for two voter challenges. The former is of Randy Pelton to the voter registration of Trevor Moehrke, and the hearing takes place for the challenge of Michael Felmly to the voter registration of Lori Mabe Smith and Richard F. Smith, Jr.
