SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — River Road in Brunswick County, which runs from Leland to Southport, will see a portion of its reopening Friday.

Closed since December, due to improvements, North Carolina Highway 133 near Funston Road is scheduled to reopen on Sept. 5, according to N.C. Department of Transportation. The half-mile portion of the road includes a new bridge that covers Sand Hill Creek.

Crews replaced pipes — including a 60-inch reinforced concrete pipe with a 84-inch corrugated aluminum pipe — the bridge and a 400-foot culvert to make the road and surrounding area more resilient during storms.

Since the closures, motorists going to Southport or Oak Island from Wilmington and Leland have had to travel a slightly longer route, from U.S. 17 to N.C. 87.

Updated information about the roads can be found here.
