SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The state transportation agency wants feedback from area residents about projects it wishes to see move forward in the next decade.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is putting together its 10-year State Transportation Improvement Plan for 2028-2037, which is assessed by a formula using data and local input to determine what gets funded. Goals of the plan include increased safety, reduced congestion and economic growth support.

Comments are open through Friday, Aug. 29, and the online survey can be found on NCDOT’s website. Submissions can include project suggestions — whether large-scale, such as interstate improvements, or smaller ones, like needing a turn lane. The suggestions can also cross various modes of transportation, such as highway, aviation, bicycle, pedestrian, ferry, public transportation and rail.

Weeklong drop-in sessions are also being hosted at NCDOT offices across the state.

Mmaintenance-related projects — patching potholes, resurfacing or ditches — are to considered in the STIP.

Local transportation planning organizations also provide input in the process and project scores and a draft list of items are slated for release in spring 2026.

The 2028-2037 draft STIP is expected to be released in early 2027, followed by adoption by the Board of Transportation that summer.
