20 properties in Carolina Beach to be elevated with FEMA funds

CAROLINA BEACH — Public comment is open for FEMA grant money to be used on structures being elevated in flood zones in a nearby beach town.

The properties are located in nine areas, and have been flooded heavily and damaged many times throughout the years. Being they’re located in high probability areas for rising waters, elevation will provide 100-year flood protection and mitigate issues.

The areas include:

  • 400 Block of Columbia Ave
  • 500 through 1500 blocks of Canal Dr.
  • 500 through 1700 Blocks of Carolina Beach Ave. N.
  • 200 Block of Lake Park Bivd. N.
  • 1100 Block of Lake Park Bivd. S
  • 200 Block of Georgia Ave.
  • 1600 block of Snapper Ln.
  • 100 Block of Maryland Ave.
  • 300 Block of Florida Ave

Properties located here will be raised to 2 feet above base flood elevation, putting them in required BFE as established by FEMA. It’s covered by FEMA’s 2023 Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant Program.

“Each property will be elevated on continuous block piers, or pilings,” according to a memo released to the public. “For continuous block pier elevations, the depth of ground disturbance will be approximately 12″-24”. For piling elevations, the ground disturbance would be approximately 15′-20′. All construction will be conducted according to North Carolina building code and local building code requirements and specifications. Environmental protection measures, such as sediment barriers and other soil loss protection, will be taken. “Each site will be dressed and graded to provide for positive drainage and ease of future maintenance.”

All comments can be sent to Haley Anderson here by May 3.
