NORTH CAROLINA — A new tax that will affect apps that run ride services and taxi companies will begin on July 1, 2025.

N.C. Department of Revenue (NCDOR) will begin administering the new Transportation Commerce Tax. It passed two years ago and will add a 1.5% tax on gross receipts for an exclusive ride service or 1% for a shared ride service among individuals who need to be picked up at different stops.

The companies must register with the NCDOR prior to July 1; registration does not apply to contracted drivers.
