SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Wednesday brought the first snow day for many people in years in the coastal corner of North Carolina, with accumulation varying in the tri-county region up to 5 inches.

Though the sun peeked through Wednesday, as many took to their sleds — or, as the case may be in Wilmington, boogie and surf boards — temperatures remained freezing, keeping much of the white stuff on the ground.
As the sun sets, temps will drop further; a cold advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. on Wednedsay, Jan. 22, to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower teens, with wind chills anticipated to be 6 above zero. This will cause accumulation to refreeze overnight, leaving roadways dangerous to drive on, with black ice likely to form and hazardous conditions.
