NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Two people were arrested in a child abduction case regarding their 3-month-old on Thursday evening.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, the incident began when a judge ordered the infant be placed in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

“The court found significant concern expressed by medical professionals and DSS and ordered this in the interest of the infants’ wellbeing,” a release from WPD noted.

When law enforcement arrived at the child’s Princess Place Drive home, his parents, Larnell Simpson and Victoria Corey, and the 3-month-old were no where to be found. The child, at the time, was in legal custody of the State of North Carolina.

Despite knowing of the court order, Simpson and Corey fled, according to law enforcement. Simpson and Corey were detained on I-40 at mile marker 368 in Duplin County by area law enforcement initiating the traffic stop on their black Dodge Charger.

WPD noted the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Duplin County Sheriff’s Office and the Warsaw Police Department helped in the case.

Simpson, 45, and Corey, 25, are being held without bond at the New Hanover County Detention Facility, pending their first appearance in court. Both are charged with first-degree kidnapping and felony child abuse.
