SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — As the holidays are in full swing, law enforcement across North Carolina will be increasing patrols through the next three weeks.
It’s part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s “Holiday Booze It & Lose It campaign,” in attempt to keep impaired drivers off roadways. In addition to heavier patrols, motorists can expect an increase in checkpoints.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, there were more than 12,100 crashes involving impaired drivers in North Carolina in 2023; 394 were fatal.
The holiday campaign will take place Monday, Dec. 16, through Sunday, Jan. 5.
Even with increased awareness created by the Booze It & Lose It since its founding in 1994, more than 9,000 people have lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes in North Carolina.
