SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — One Brunswick County region that experienced significant flooding Monday is asking its residents to stay put.

Southport Mayor Rich Alt has issued a 9 p.m. curfew, which will lift at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. He also asked residents to shelter in place, at their homes or places of employment, as access to the sleepy coastal town is cut off currently.

All inbound roads to Southport for thru and nonessential traffic is restricted due to N.C. 211 collapsing in multiple places. This includes a deteriorated road to the Duke Energy Plant where employees must stay until the road between Walmart and Dosher Cutoff Road is corrected.

Alt signed an emergency declaration on Monday which gives officials the authority to make decisions based on public safety.

Southport emergency departments responded Monday to multiple calls from people stranded in flooded waters, as the region received roughly 13 inches of rain from the storm.

Anyone in the area that needs to report an emergency is asked to dial 911 and to keep these numbers handy:

  • Water/sewer: Brunswick County Public Utilities — 910-755-7921
  • Power outage: Brunswick Electric — 800-682-5309
  • Southport Emergency Operations Center — (910) 457-7915.
