The Agenda: Government meetings this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Tuesday, Sept. 3

New Hanover County Board of Commissioners will meet at 4 p.m. at 230 Government Center Dr. The agenda includes resolutions regarding bicycle trails in both the Middle Sound area and S. College to 17th Street, as well as  a public hearing to rezone 7 acres at 5000 S. College Rd. from conditional community business district to regional business for general retail sales, business service center and other limited uses. Livestream the meeting here.

Wilmington Housing Authority meets at 4 p.m. at Rankin Terrace, 415 N. 12th St. An agenda was not posted by press.

New Hanover County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. at the NHC Board of Education Center, 1809 S 13th St. The agenda includes a first read on policy 3225/4312/7320, Technology Responsible Use; and a presentation from Evan Folds about sustainability in schools, focused on natural land care. The meeting can be livestreamed here.

City of Wilmington Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 102 N. Third St. for its regular meeting, to be livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Public hearing for a rezoning to bring 184 units of workforce housing proposed for Kerr Avenue (read PCD’s coverage here), followed by ordinances for city council to consider $4 million in gap financing for the project, which includes $3.1 million from the General Fund, paired with  $850,000 in loan programs already appropriated 
  • Ordinance for the $1.7 million appropriation to the general fund and $100,000 to the parking fund for improvement financing at 115 N. 3rd Street and 114 N. 2nd Street, for a lease to the United States General Services Administration

Oak Island Town Council will host a special closed-session meeting in council chambers at Oak Island Town Hall at 5:30 p.m. 

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 3 p.m. The agenda includes a UDO project update and administrative reports such as the NC Association of County Commissioners Legislative Agenda. The meeting will take place at 30 Government Center Dr. and can be livestreamed here.

The Wrightsville Beach Planning Board is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers of Town Hall, 321 Causeway Drive. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Town of Topsail Beach will host a special meeting at 2 p.m. to discuss the future of trash collection for Topsail Beach.

Surf City Town Council meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the Surf City Municipal Complex, 214 W. Florence Way. On the agenda is the Applewood Trace Phase I approval by council and for the town to consider the Water Resources Development Grant Resolution. Watch meetings here.

The Town of Topsail Beach Parks and Recreation will meet at 10 a.m. The agenda includes the continued discussion of the parks and recreation master plan.

Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. in the Cape Fear Room of The COAST (Center of Applied Sciences and Technology), 1109 Old Ocean Hwy, in Bolivia. The agenda includes discussion of the 2024-2025 parent-advisory council, consideration of purchase at Jackeys Creek for new school location, and change to payroll calendar. Pender County Board of Commissioners meet at 4 p.m. in the Pender County Public Assembly room. An agenda was not posted by press.

Wednesday, Sept. 4

City of Wilmington Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Thalian Hall, City Council Chambers 102 N. 3rd Street, 2nd floor. The meeting can be livestreamed here. Multiple public hearings are on the agenda, including:

  • Amending the city code to reduce outdoor amplified sound separation requirements in the UMX zoning district
  • Rezone 2.3 acres from light industrial and medium-high-density mixed residential to UMX, urban mixed-use district. The properties include 1107 and 1109 S. Front Street; 1106 and 1112 S. 2nd Street; 101, 104, 108, 112, 114, 115 and 116 Marstellar Street

North Topsail Board of Alderman will meet at 11 a.m. at Town Hall, 2008 Loggerhead Court. Watch meetings here. The agenda includes: 

  • Considering applications for vacancies on two boards, including the planning board and beach inlet, sound advisory committee 
  • Shellfish lease proposal update considering moratorium on new shellfish leases in Onslow and Pender counties
    Interlocal agreement about soliciting proposals for the management of trash and recycling services 

Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s Finance Committee will meet at 9 a.m. at 235 Government Center Dr. in the Jordan Room. The agenda includes a $784,970 IBM software subscription support renewal and migration to MAS/SaaS, as well as design-build procurement authorizations for federally funded water main extensions to private wells and for non-federal or state-funded water main extensions to private Wells. Thereafter the Executive Committee meets at 10 a.m.; its agenda was not published by press.
