BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A discharge of untreated wastewater was caught overnight from Sea Trail Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Anywhere from 27,000 to 30,000 gallons were released into a tributary of Calabash River from 1395 Angels Trace SW in Sunset Beach. Officials believe the release began overnight at 2:15 a.m. but had it contained by 4:30 a.m.

“This release occurred due to exponential rains and corresponding influent flows associated with Tropical Storm Debby, as well as the failure of an influent pump,” according to a release from the county.

The failed pump has been replaced with the treatment facility operational by noon Friday. Staff continues to sample and monitor the affected downstream site.

Another untreated wastewater spill was detected near 6610 Dunrobin Point Southwest in Ocean Isle Beach Friday around 11:30 a.m. Roughly 1,000 gallons were discharged into a stormwater pond, which drains into a tributary of the Shallotte River.

The leak was caused by a break on the 2-inch sewer service line that staff is correcting. Remediation is ongoing.
