BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A shelter scheduled to open at 3 p.m. suspended operations Wednesday.

Brunswick County was scheduled to open a shelter at Town Creek Middle School in Winnabow at 3 p.m. but the county announced it would not continue, effective 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Only one person showed up but ended up having a safe place to go, which shelter staff helped them locate to. This is according to staff’s response on social media, posted Thursday evening.

The release sent to media noted: “Brunswick County Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby and will assess if additional shelter needs are necessary in the future.”

By 9:30 p.m. the shelter had reopened based on worsening conditions from Tropical Storm Debby. Domestic cats and dogs are allowed at the shelter.
