The Agenda: Local government meetings this week

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Every Monday Port City Daily will share upcoming government meetings around the tri-county region. If there’s an item of public interest, we’ll include that below the listed meeting, too.

Monday, July 8

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet at 2:00 p.m. in the commissioner’s chambers at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Opioid litigation settlement with Kroger
  • An interlocal agreement with the town of St.James and the town of Varnamtown for fire administration and enforcement services. 
  • A presentation for a proposed text amendment to Brunswick County Unified Development Ordinance related to trees, landscaping, and greenspace.

The Brunswick County Planning Board will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the commissioner’s chambers at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia. The agenda includes: 

  • A rezoning request for 2.81 acres on Washington Road from low-density commercial to rural, low-density commercial. The site is intended to be used for an indoor and outdoor pickleball facility. 
  • A rezoning request for 26.15 acres on Midway Road from medium-density residential to low-density commercial. 
  • A rezoning request for 12.07 acres on Boonesneck Road from high density residential to low density commercial. 

The New Hanover County Board of Elections meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Longleaf Room, 1241 A Military Cutoff Road. It’s open to the public and those who cannot attend in person can call in to 1-336-218-2051, press ID 745 426 496 followed by pound. It’s also available for livestream here.

The Town of Oak Island’s Recreation Advisory Board will meet at 4:00 p.m. at the Oak Island Community Center, 102 South East 47th Street.  An agenda was not posted by press. 

Tuesday, July 9

Carolina Beach Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. at 1121 Lake Park Blvd. The meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes public hearings on the final draft of the UDO amendment, as well as text amendment to zoning district regulations.

Pender County Board of Elections will meet at 6 p.m. at 807 Walker St. in Burgaw. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Belville Planning Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the commissioners chambers at Belville’s Town Hall, 63 River Road. The agenda includes: 

  • Updates on feasibility study 
  • Introduction of a major/minor site plan

The Town of Oak Island will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the council chambers at Oak Island’s Town Hall, 4601 Eat Oak Island Drive. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes: 

  • Approval of ADA-accessible Kayak Launch Project
  • Selection of Stakeholders and Steering Committee for the Comprehensive Land Use Plan Update 

The Brunswick County Board of Education will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Cape Fear Room of The COAST (Center of Applied Sciences and Technology), 109 Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Approval of a 2024-2029 strategic plan. 
  • Approval of a new Brunswick County Schools logo. 

Wednesday, July 10

New Hanover Airport Authority meets at 5 p.m. in the ILM Executive Conference Room. The agenda includes a contract to approve an agreement for NC Department of Transportation for NHCAA to pay up to $1,000,000 toward the construction project to widen 23rd Street from MLK Parkway to Airport Boulevard, as well as approve amendment to change bylaws, including expanding board from five to seven members.

The Wilmington Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. in city hall, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes public hearings on: 

  • Amending City Code Chapter 18 to reduce outdoor amplified sound separation requirements in the UMX zoning district
  • Rezoning 120 Switchyard Road from MF-MH(L)(CD) to MD-10(CD) for a residential development with 60 townhomes

The Topsail Beach Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. The agenda includes multiple public hearings, consideration of a contract for Thomas Construction Group for a new public safety building.

Thursday, July 11

Carolina Beach Planning and Zoning will meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers, 1121 Lake Park Blvd. The meetings are livestreamed here. An agenda was not posted by press.

The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. in city hall, 102 N. Third St. Meetings are live streamed here. The agenda includes evidentiary hearings on: 

  • New infill construction at 111 N. Seventh St. 
  • Installation of a driveway at 416 N. Fifth Ave.
  • Installation of a driveway at 216 S. Third St.  

The New Hanover County Planning Board will meet at 5 p.m. at the NHC Courthouse, 24 N. Third St. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes:

  • Public hearing on a request by New Hanover County Planning & Land Use to amend the 2016 Comprehensive Plan to incorporate updated guidance for the development of the Western Bank of the Cape Fear and Northeast Cape Fear Rivers
  • Public hearing on a request by Adam Sosne with Brightwater Development Company, applicant, on behalf of MHMJ, LLC, property owner, to rezone approximately 12.68 acres zoned Conditional RMF-M, Residential Mul-Family – Moderate Density located at 5322 Carolina Beach Road to new (CZD) RMF-M district for a maximum 133 aCached single-family dwelling units.

The Town of Navassa’s Parks and Recreation Board will meet at 7:00 p.m. at 338 Main Street in Navassa. An agenda was not posted by press. 

The Town of Leland’s Economic Development Committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Town Hall at 102 Town Hall Drive in Leland. Meetings are livestreamed here. The agenda includes a public comment and an economic development report. 

The North Topsail Beach Planning Board will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. at town hall, 2008 Loggerhead Court. The agenda includes:

  • Rezoning Application #RZ24-000001: 1090 NEW RIVER INLET RD (R20 to R15)
  • APA Video: Zoning Ordinances Presentation for Planning Officials

Friday, July 12

The Town of Leland’s Town Council will have a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the Town Hall at 102 Town Hall Drive in Leland. The agenda includes a strategic planning retreat. Meetings are livestreamed here.
