Wanted South Carolina man arrested after SWAT deployed to home

Donald Yates.

WILMINGTON — A man has been arrested after a standoff with the Wilmington Police Department Monday morning.

Donald Yates, 26, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, resist/delay/obstruct, and possession of a Schedule I narcotic. Yates is a convicted felon who was wanted out of South Carolina for a parole violation with the original charge being attempted murder.

Around midnight on April 7, WPD units responded to the 1000 block of 43rd Street in reference to a verbal disturbance. Upon arrival, officers said they noticed a man had barricaded himself inside a residence, acting erratic and shouting threats.

The WPD reports officers heard the racking of a firearm and observed through a window the suspect pointing a gun in the direction of officers from inside. A WPD officer fired a round toward the subject, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury.

Following hours of negotiation attempts, the Cape Fear Regional Special Teams SWAT team deployed gas, which resulted in bringing Yates out without further incident. Impairment is also suspected in this case and additional charges may be forthcoming.

Prior to this incident, officers were called to the same residence multiple times in recent days for dispute-related calls for service.
