SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The Pender and Brunswick schools districts have announced the cancellation of afterschool activities on Jan. 12.

Severe weather is expected to come through the region late in the afternoon and into the night. It could create hazardous driving conditions and in the interest of safety for students and staff, all activities are canceled following the school day.

The storm is expected to bring gusts of 45 to 60 miles per hour, possibly spawning tornadoes. Hail also could occur this evening and a coastal flood advisory is in effect for minor tidal flooding and in low-lying areas. The storm is expected to arrive around 6 p.m. and pass through by 2 a.m. Saturday; gusty conditions could linger.
