Pender County manager to retire in March

PENDER COUNTY — After 18 months at the helm of Pender County but 33 years in local government, county manager David Andrews announced Friday he plans to retire.

He sent a letter to the board of commissioners announcing he will step down effective March 1, 2024. Commissioner chair Brad George said in a release the search for his replacement will begin immediately.

Hired in September 2022, Andrews has been instrumental in Pender County’s approach to employee hiring, recruitment, and retention. According to a press release, he has been active in capital improvement projects, such as the acquisition of land for a new K-8 school and the design and permitting phases for a new detention center and health and human services building.

As Pender County has faced issues with its water supply for a growing population, Andrews has helped push the following projects along including the membrane water treatment plant and construction of the Scotts Hill water tower.

Originally from Texas, Andrews began his career in finance in the City of South Tuscon in 1990. Prior to his time in Pender County, he was the city manager of Town of Boiling Springs Lake and manager of the Town of Carrboro for more than 10 years.

In the letter to commissioners, Andrews stated he’s committed to a smooth transition for a new county manager by completing ongoing projects and providing the necessary assistance before his departure.

“On behalf of the citizens of Pender County and the Pender Board of Commissioners, I would like to congratulate Andrews on announcing his retirement,” George said in the release. “During his tenure with Pender, his leadership has been instrumental in advancing the county to the next level. We wish him well on his next adventure.”
