SURF CITY — Law enforcement were called to a school campus Tuesday to investigate potential gunfire sounds staff reported hearing.
According to a release from the Town of Surf City, staff from Surf City Elementary and Middle schools said loud sounds were coming from a wooded area near Shepards Road. It’s located roughly a quarter-to-a-half mile from the schools’ shared campus.
A school resource officer contacted Surf City Police Department to investigate. Police Chief Phil Voorhees told Port City Daily multiple officers responded and “thoroughly searched” the vicinity, as well as talked to area residents.
“No evidence of any shots fired on or at school property was found,” he said.
The police determined it to be an isolated incident, which didn’t put anyone in danger. A lockdown was not ordered and the campus was cleared of threat.
Messages were sent from the school system notifying guardians of the occurrence.
