TOPSAIL BEACH — A maintenance project will begin next week on the coast in Pender County to combat flooding.

North Carolina Department of Transportation’s maintenance staff will close one lane of South Shore Drive — N.C. 50 — in Topsail Beach beginning Oct. 23. Crews will then install a stormwater collection system, which during a rain event will receive water into an underground chamber.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of November. Drivers are encouraged to use caution when traveling down the roadway due to closures.
