One dead after collision with vehicle

WILMINGTON — One man riding his bike on Tuesday was struck at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Oleander Drive and passed away from his injuries.

Just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wilmington Police Department officers responded to a traffic collision at the intersection. A WPD corporal traveling in the lane next to the vehicle that struck the cyclist was first on scene. Both the WPD officer and the driver of the vehicle attempting life-saving aid to the bike rider. The bicyclist, 79-year-old Edward Lillis, died at the scene.

Shortly after, the WPD Traffic Unit responded to the scene and began their investigation, where it was discovered Lillis was crossing westbound traffic on Oleander Drive without having the right of way. As he entered the roadway, he was struck by the vehicle. No criminal charges have been filed.
