At the county’s annual convention earlier in the month, new leadership was appointed for the Brunswick County Democratic Party.

Shelley Allen of Holden Beach was elected chair on April 15. She served as vice-chair in 2021 and was appointed to acting chair in 2022 after Eric Terashima exited to run for legislative office.

Previously, Allen also served on the party’s communications team.

“Allen plans to build on the many strong organizing and communications initiatives begun by her predecessor to expand the party’s membership and visibility,” according to a release from the party.

A former teacher in elementary school, Allen received her Ph.D. in reading education from Ohio State University. In her former hometown of Richmond, she served as a consultant for two literacy nonprofits before she returned to teaching.

Allen and her husband, Mark, moved to Holden Beach in 2020.

The convention, held at the party’s headquarters in Bolivia, also included elections of other leadership:

  • Arthur Hill, first vice chairr
  • Kristine Garrity, second vice chair
  • Michael Rush, third vice chair
  • Sherry Williams, secretary
  • Vic Gallo, treasurer
