NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Two Cape Fear teachers are finalists for the state Beginning Teach of the Year AWard.

Hannah Fitta, a teacher at College Park Elementary, in New Hanover County and Kbria Filali, a teacher at Cape Fear Middle School in Pender County, have been named in a list of 27 teachers from across the state as finalists selected as finalists for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching 2023 Beginning Teacher of the Year Award.

“I am passionate about learning and teaching, especially teaching English to other speakers,” Filali said. “I feel so fortunate to work in an environment that allows me to implement best practices and continue to grow as an educator.”

One of the finalists will be presented with the award on March 9, on the campus of Western Carolina University.

“We appreciate the enthusiastic response from all over the state for the Beginning Teacher of the Year Award,” said NCCAT Executive Director M. Brock Womble said in a press release. “These finalists provide a snapshot of the lasting impact great teachers have on our students from the first to the last day they step into a North Carolina public school. We are excited about this opportunity to honor teachers for the important work they do in our state.”

The winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize, participation in a GoGlobal NC trip next year and supply funds for the teacher’s school. The runner up will receive $2,000 cash. All finalists will have travel expenses paid to participate in the NCCAT professional development week which runs from March 6 to 10.
