NEW HANOVER COUNTY –– Nearly 200 local businesses have been awarded a combined $4.2 million in local grant funding from the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County.
The funds were allocated to the city and county through the American Rescue Plan Act. In turn, the local governments appointed the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce to oversee grant applications and awards.

The chamber announced Wednesday the grants will help offset more than $65 million in lost revenue due to the pandemic. Awardees employ an estimated 3,700 people, according to the chamber.
Grants were available to businesses in the retail, hospitality, and service sectors.
Of the 650 businesses that applied for the funding in July, 192 met all qualifications, according to the chamber. Wilmington is funding 86 companies with $1.9 million and the county is supporting 106 businesses with $2.3 million.
More than two-thirds of grant awardee business owners are minorities, women, or veterans. On average, each business was awarded nearly $22,000.
Eligible for-profit businesses must have been independent, locally owned, and physically located in the county. One or more business owners must have been a county resident and the company should have more than one employee and been able to show financial hardship caused by the pandemic.
