Update (1:20 p.m.) — Pender County Schools spokesperson Alex Riley clarified that, at this time, there are 29 students and eight staff members at Topsail Elementary who have been asked to quarantine or isolate in direct relation to the Covid-19 exposure.
SURF CITY — Kindergarten and fourth-grade students at Topsail Elementary School have been quarantined following exposure to a person who tested positive for Covid-19.
This follows a wave of 60 student and 12 staff quarantines district-wide reported by a PCS spokesperson last Friday, at the end of the second week of the fall semester — including 28 students combined at Surf City Elementary and Middle schools.
The Pender County health department conducted a contract tracing effort, after which the students of both classes were asked to quarantine, according to a statement provided by Pender County Schools on Wednesday night.

The school district said it is now contacting family members of all students in those two classes to notify them of the exposure.
“PCHD is advising families on the recommended course of action regarding testing and symptom monitoring. Pender County Schools will work with these families to make sure students’ educational needs are met during this quarantine,” according to the school district.
