ICYMI – Face masks, Sartarelli, Hannah Faith, downtown artwork fine [Free]

The news this week was dominated by the story of three veteran Wilmington police officers who were fired after they were caught making racist comments and threats. While it’s unlikely you missed it, if you did you can find our coverage of that here — and an in-depth discussion of the issue on this weekend’s podcast.

At the very moment the Wilmington Police Department was announcing the termination of three officers, Governor Roy Cooper was announcing the latest statewide regulations, including a mandatory mask rule.

The bar has been closed by Governor Cooper’s executive orders for three months. So when the city chose to fine the bar for a mural it has had for a year, some questioned the timing.

While debates rage over whether or not the state government has gone too far with regulations, the numbers of Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

As weeks turn into months, Hannah Faith’s family continues to wait for answers. The family has shared new information that sheds light on the case, and is offering a reward for additional clues.

The situation has gotten so bad, according to a letter from the Faculty Senate president, that an outside firm may be brought in.
