WILMINGTON — The county’s ABC board said it approved new, reduced hours to protect the “health and well-being” of its customers.

The new hours, which take effect on Wednesday, March 25, will be 11 a.m to 7 p.m. (the stores will continue to be open Monday through Saturday.) The hours will be in effect until further notice.

The New Hanover County ABC Board also asked senior patrons to purchase liquor from the new 6009 Market Street location. This location will have walk-up services from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. “The selections at this location will be limited, however if there is a selection that is not available, please ask the clerks for assistance,” according to the board.

Most states that have declared a ‘shelter in place’ or stay-home order have included liquor stores as “essential businesses,” along with grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies. Pennsylvania closed its state-run liquor stores (apparently the only state to do so), leading to record-breaking sales on the day before the closure — and also followed by pushback by food and beverage lobbyists and groups concerned about the impact on those with substance abuse issues. Governor Tom Wolfe said recently he is reconsidering the move.

“The NHCABC Board will continue to monitor this ever-changing public health issue. It is the NHCABC Board’s intent to keep the retail stores open throughout the county unless directed to close by local, state or federal authorities. Should the Board need to make any additional changes these will be communicated to our citizens as soon as possible,” according to the Board.

The Board is also posting news updates online.
